Gfree Meal Planning Made Easy

Modified Meal Planning Made Easier

Dealing with a modified diet or two in a household is a challenge in and of itself. Add to that the chore of meal planning and you've got some work cut out for you. I have always struggled with meal planning—so much so that a couple of posts back I hinted around for your tips on the subject.

I think I got two.

So does that make it safe to say that many of you are in my boat? More often than not you dread the four o'clock hour? You're in a dinner rut?

Well, I've found something that might help out. It's called Gfree.

Gfree is a menu planning service that provides all of the tools you need to prepare healthy gluten-free dinners. And, it is the only gluten-free recipe website to offer an automatic grocery list creator (woot! big time saver).

Gfree truly is the answer to “what’s for dinner?

Here's how it works.

1. Once a week you log on to www.gfreecuisine.com

2. From a menu of 10 meals you choose the 5 (each includes a side) you will make that week.

3. Hit "Print PDF" and a PDF document of the recipe cards and a shopping list are automatically generated.

4. Head to the store to pick up everything you'll need for the week.

5. DONE!

For those who like visuals ...

Here is the menu we chose last week.

Here is what the shopping list and a recipe excerpt looked like.

Note the recipe codes and how they correspond with the shopping list. If you are unable to make a particular dinner, simply cross off all the items on the grocery list with that code. Have additional items to pick up? There's lots of room at the bottom of the page to pen them in.

And here is what those meals looked like.

Three of the sides are not pictured as I used produce that was in my CSA box.

1. Maple Glazed Chicken Breasts 2. Skillet Tamale Pie 3. Breakfast Tortilla Cups (for dinner) 4. Baked Cod with Old Bay Butter

Why I like Gfree and why you might, too.

1. With Gfree, meal planning can be a family affair. On Thursday night we all sit down at the computer and each pick out a meal for the week. Friday I do the shopping.

2. Each menu item includes a main dish and a side—usually a vegetable. It keeps meal time simple. Two dishes ... done.

3. With a click, the shopping list and recipes are adjusted to suit the number of servings you need.

4. When I used to plan for the week, it took me 1-3 hours on a Sunday to find recipes and write-up a shopping list. With Gfree, the week's meal plan and shopping list is done in 5 minutes. A serious time saver!

5. I like that two nights are left open for eating out or leftovers. Depending on the week I may choose five meals—or just three. Though rare, the weeks I choose three are usually because we are on the go and five home-cooked sit-down dinners just aren't likely to happen or I just want a little wiggle room to be spontaneous.

6. Armed with my printed and stapled shopping list and recipes I feel organized.

7. There is a nice variety of chicken, beef, seafood and pork entrees, and usually at least one vegetarian option.

8. Most recipes are easy to modify to fit your dietary needs. Some are not. All recipes are gluten-free. Those that are dairy-free are marked "DF". I'd love it if Gfree highlighted the egg-free recipes. Maybe that will come. Bottom line, if you feel comfortable with modifying recipes or winging it a bit, you're good to go. If you have 129 food allergies, Gfree may not work for you. The best way to find out is try it for 3 months—you're only out $30.

9. Recipes are easy to follow and not overly complicated.

10. On average, five Gfree dinners and sides cost less than $100 per week.

11. And there are the extras; gluten-free bread recipes, freezer recipes and gluten-free dessert recipes are also on the site as well as helpful suggestions for dairy substitutions.

12. With Gfree I have branched out. I have tried techniques and dishes that I haven't or otherwise wouldn't have tried. I have impressed my husband with some fancy lookin' and tasty meals.

The only challenge I have encountered is that each week I get a box of produce from our local CSA farm. You never know what will be in it and the Gfree sides rarely coordinate with what's in the box. So again, I modify and improvise. If a side calls for caramelized onions and green beans but all I have is carrots and zucchini, then caramelized onions with carrots and zucchini it is!

If this sounds like something you'd like to try, visit Gfree. The cost is only $10 a month. Relish (Gfree's non-gfree sister) starts at $7 a month. Armed with a shopping list and a plan, I easily save $10 in impulse buys alone.

Lifefactory™ Bottles | Fashionable Hydration

These Lifefactory™ Glass Beverage Bottles are ultra-chic and ultra-durable. Hydrate in style!

:: This is not a paid review. I do not do paid reviews. If I review a product, it's because I love it, period ::

Last weekend some friends and I ventured into Pharamaca Integrative Pharmacy in Boulder, Colorado. I was a kid in a candy shop! I splurged and picked up some all-natural sunscreen, a couple of soy candles and one of these Lifefactory™ Glass Beverage Bottles (the cute Pearl White one at right).

I fail miserably at drinking the recommended six 8-ounce glasses of water a day. I've just never found the right thinga-ma-jig to tote water around in. I'm not keen on those stainless steel deals—how on earth do you ensure that you really get them clean? Plastic bottles—too much waste and possibly a good dose of BPA. And those Nalgene bottles? Well, way too cumbersome to drink out of lady-like style. Thankfully to Lifefactory, I think I have found the answer.

How do you jazz up water to make it more fun to sip on?
Especially for kids? I need some ideas : )

Lifefactory fuses modern sensibility, eco-friendly composition and exceptional utility to produce their glass beverage bottles. They are free of known harmful chemicals including BPA, phthalates and PVC.

And they don't stop there. Check out their line of baby & kid products: bottles, sippy cups and teethers using the same materials.

I bought the 16-ounce beverage bottle and am really happy with it. It's the perfect on-the-go size. Its shape and the handle on the cap make it easy to hold, it fits in most car cup holders and the wide mouth makes adding ice cubes, fruit or tea bags easy.

This product has my two thumbs up! Purchase direct from Lifefactory or find a store near you that carries their products.

Now the big question? What fashion color will you buy?

Kiddie Sippy Cups! No nasty BPAs. Just a glass jar in a durable silicon "wrap."We're past the baby bottle stage with our kids ... but if we were still in it, I would snap some of these up in a heartbeat!

larkburger You Make Me Sing

The larkburger with cheese (or without) © Image copyright larkburgerIf you eat gluten-free, dairy-free or ANYthing-free, you know the joy it brings to find an eating establishment that goes above and beyond in catering to special dietary needs. Today I am writing about larkburger.

On a recent visit to Ft. Collins, Colorado and I suggested to the hubby that we see what larkburger was all about. We did the usual. He swung by the front door ... I hopped out of the car ... ran in ... asked if they had a gluten-free offering. When the young girl behind the counter pleasantly replied "yes" and when out of the corner of my eye I saw that the menu board clearly state "ask about our Gluten-Free Menu," I knew we were good to go! I gave my hungry bunch the thumbs up and they traipsed on in. Little did we know, we were in for a real gluten-free treat!

larkburger Ft. Collins © Image copyright larkburgerLet me tell you a little about larkburger. First off, the place is clean! That speaks volumes. Second, larkburger takes food allergies very seriously. That speaks even louder. Other impressions:

  • The food is fresh. How often can you order edamame or a fresh green salad with your burger?
  • And how many burger joints offer to top your burger with a truffle aioli?
  • All plates, containers and utensils are biodegradable.
  • Packaging is made with unbleached paper pulp.
  • They are 100% wind-powered.
  • The entire menu is preservative-free and additive-free.

And here are the real kickers!

  • They offer a gluten-free burger bun that rocks! They get them from Sweet Escapes Pastries, a Boulder-based gluten-free, nut-free bakery.
  • Kids EAT FREE on Monday nights (4pm 'til close)!
  • Got a beef with beef? Try their turkey burger, tuna burger or portabella burger.

Thank you larkburger for doing what you do. You've got our business.

To learn more about larkburger's allergen-free offering, visit the larkburger website. I like how straightforward larkburger is with their allergen info. I wasn't handed a 20-page ingredients list to sift through prior to ordering. The menu is one page which hubby likes because he believes there is a direct correlation between the brevity of a menu and the capacity of the restaurant to successfully create each item. In his words, lesser is gooder!

Okay, now for the not-so-good news. Presently there are only four larkburger locations and they are all in Colorado. Let's cross our fingers that they become wildly successful (I'm sure they will/are) and grow their chain. Until then, you can find larkburger in Ft. Collins, Boulder, Edward and Greenwood Village, Colorado.

Annie Chun's Seaweed Snacks

Photo copyright Annie Chun's, Inc

I can't remember the last time I inhaled a food like I did Annie Chun's Roasted Sesame Seaweed Snacks. If you haven't tried these, do!

The ingredients list is short and sweet (which I like): Seaweed, Canola oil, Salt, Sesame Oil (though I am not a fan of Canola oil). Ingredients are listed as "all-natural."

These little melt-in-your-mouth nori crisps are my new grocery shopping trip treat. Definitely healthier than the chocolate bar I usually grab. Eat an entire two-serving package and you've only consumed 50 calories (30 from fat) and a good dose of vitamin A.

To see Annie's full product offering, visit www.anniechun.com (I couldn't find these snacks on her website, just on Amazon, hmmm).

No where on the package does it say that this product is certified gluten-free (no cross contamination, etc). I will submit an inquiry to Annie and see what she says.

This is an independent review. I did not receive compensation in any way or form for it.

Tovolo Ice Cream Pop Molds

© Photo copyright of Sur La Table I don't care if it drops to 10 below this winter, I'll still be making popsicles. This summer I've had so much fun making and serving up the cutest popsicles thanks to these great little Tovolo® pop molds. They were an impulse buy at Sur La Table (the coolest cooking gadget store EVER!) earlier in the year. What I love about them is that for my son who is dairy-free, these fun ice cream dilly bops look like the real thing. And even better, the drip guards really work. They are well constructed—not flimsy like so many others out there.

  • Each mold can be removed separately, so you can enjoy one pop at a time.
  • Built-in drip guards put an end to sticky fingers. (BIG BONUS!)
  • Choose your ingredients, like pureed fruit, fruit juices, ice cream, yogurt or sorbet, and enjoy.
  • Dishwasher safe.

So enjoy some popsicles this winter. I think I'll try freezing mine outside. Sadly, I'm certain it will work!
